Sad News:
To
all -
One of our oldest XBoulderCops will not be joining us at the
Reunion. Donald "Hoppy" Hopkins passed away this
afternoon at 4:05 pm after a long battle with heart problems.
Hoppy was really looking forward to the reunion. He will surely
be missed and many "war stories" to be told will
include memories of him.
Funeral arrangements are pending. I will forward an obituary
and funeral information as they become available.
Cards may be sent to:
Mrs. Dorothy Hopkins and family
400 Longs Peak Ave.

Larry FYI..........................Mike
For those who remember Jim Finn, I talked to him by phone
yesterday.
He is doing quite well and is now the Police Chief of Calera,
Alabama
(since 1998). -Add another to the ranks of Chiefs coming
from the
Boulder PD. - The department is a 21 officer agency in a
growing
community.
Anyway, he gave me permission to let everyone know that
he is doing
well and still thinks of the PD. He may make it back for
the
anniversary. If you wish to contact him, you can go to the
City of
Calera web site to find his e-mail. His work number is 205-668-3809.(3/9/03)
Bill Spotts:

Larry Kinion on the Reunion:
All systems are "GO" for the reunion.
Registration/reservations will be in the mail next week.
The "early bird special" for early registration,
as reported on the web site, is OFF. (ie., the lapel pin
badge, however, they will be available to purchase at the
reunion for only $3.00 ea.) It is VERY IMPORTANT that you
note the deadlines for pre-paid registrations. There is
limited seating for the Friday night Banquet and it looks
like we will have a full house. Just confirmed today, Gary
Shapiro, Channel 9 News anchor and old Boulder beat reporter
will be our MC. The BPBA is going "all out" for
the picnic/luau and the golf tournament will have many of
the local golfers playing too. Now all we need is good weather.
It should be a HOOT!
Jim Hemberger:
Just
a quick note, I'm going in tomorrow (Friday) for a complete
hip
> replacement. This is the forth surgery in four years
as a result of kidney
> cancer, I sure hope this is the last one! This puts
my reunion plans on
hold
> for now, I'll have to see how things go. I have been
able to help Silvia
to
> some extent on the book and think it should be a good
one. I have one or
two

> Keep up the good job on the net and web site, its is
really filling a gap
> that needed to be filled.
> Best to all,

Subject: The Reunion.
Dear Larry,
I am sorry to say that I do not think that I will be able
to make it to the Reunion so many of you folks have worked
so hard to put together. It is a just and noble cause what
you are doing. I feel strongly in the bonds of blue that
each person that has walked that beat feels in his heart.
That inner blue flame will burn there the rest of his or
her life.
The BPD will always hold a special place in my heart where
many of those I served with will always me also. There is
not a day that goes by that I do not reflect on someone
or something that happened in those tumultuous times. When
dynamite was thrown, police cars burned, riots raged, and
hippies came to Boulder by the VW vans and thumb. Oh yes,
there were the bombings at Chautaugua, and at I think it
was Burger King on 28th St and another at the County Court
Building on Pearl and 13th St. Oh yes, I remember the sounds
like it was yesterday. And there was also the good things
that went on too but they never reach the same amplitude
as the stuff we faced on the street. So many experiences.
so many good officers, that is what I was a part of and
am very proud to have been on the Boulder Police Department.
I am sorry to say that due to my health or the lack thereof,
I will not be able to attend the fine opportunity to meet
once more with everyone. I do hope that everyone that is
able to go there will do so as it will be a great time to
rehash all that went before to the time of today. Mostly
though, I think the importance is in that thin blue line
that is attached to all of our hearts be strengthened and
the flame grow brighter. Let us also take time to remember
warmly those fallen officers who have gone from our midst.
They all leave me with sorrow that I wasn't there to help
them, but I know that we all must walk down that lane alone.
So Please take the time to reflect on their deeds of helping
and serving others in a time of need. That is what the thin
blue line is all about. That is what we are about. I am
proud to have been a Boulder cop, who wore a badge and carried
a stick, who answered calls for help and advice, who directed
traffic at the end of the game, or responded to an emergency
running hot all the way. Catching crooks and scoundrels
too, we would pursue what crimes there were, to all ends
if need be to put the culprit away. We would work round
the clock if necessity called, and come in for the next
shift to do it again. I was a cop on the street that walked
a beat. I wore a badge and a hat for all to see. I was the
man to go to see, about this or that or what was seen. I
kept the peace and took pride in my work when children could
play safely and people could work. That was my job. A cop.
In Blue.
So Larry I will cut and run. I am afraid I have sent to
you more than I should but that is in my heart and I have
to share it with you.
P.S. I love all you folks with a blue heart attached. Thanks,
Gary Burreson.

I
have added some photographs provided by Larry Kinion to
the picture pages, please send yours. (9-21-02)
Chief
Mike Root:
It's
official...
Mike Root is taking early retirement from the Boulder Police
Department on Sep. 30th and starts as Chief of Police in
Kiowa, Colo. on Oct. 1st.. I don't call that retirement,
but Congratulation on both counts to Mike. Mike will be
trading, "dodging bullets" to dodging hail stones
and from "chasing bad guys" to chasing tornadoes
down in Elbert County.
There will be a farewell and retirement reception for Mike
at the Boulder Police Department on Sept. 30th at 3:00 pm.
Hope many of you can attend or send him a note.. (9-21-02)
New
Page:
A
new page has been added to the front page. It will list
job opportunities, jobs wanted, and services offered by
xbouldercops.org members. Take a look and send in your information.

More
Pictures:
John
Andrews has provided some interesting pictures. Go take
a look. (9-4-02)
Pictures:
Thanks
to Jim Hemberger we have added many new pictures. The page
still needs some work, but they are there. I have more than
I can scan right now, but will get them all scanned and
back to Jim soon. They are great! Jim thanks. If anyone
out there has some more, lets get them loaded. (8-10-02)
Jim
Hemberger:
I'm
living in Missouri, WHY?, its very inexpensive and my wifes
family is here.
I have 35 acres on a farm type area with about 30 of the
acres wooded. The
peace and quiet is worth it all. I do miss the Colorado
mountains and the
lower humidity, but anywhere you go is a trade off. (8-8-02)
Clint
Fullen:
This
news is several years old, but we just learned that Clint
Fullen retired (again) from the San Diego Police Department.
He was involved in some innovative crime scene work at San
Diego. Clint mentioned that he is enjoying retirement and
is doing some consulting. He has one child living in Longmont
so he makes it to the area at least several times a year.
You may contact him via the email list. (8-8-02)
Pictures:
We
are seeking pictures of the Department, members, anything
to add to the web site, so, if you have some, contact Hal
Nees. (8-8-02)
